Pitching for an investment is not an easy thing to do.  It is part art and part business acumen.  The short version is the pitch should mimic a great business plan in structure and flow, but be told as a story.  It ultimately depends on your style of presentation, but the most straightforward delivery is…

The Necessary Evil of Timesheets

Nobody likes filling out timesheets, but there are a number of reasons why you should adopt and maintain this discipline right from the beginning of your enterprise.

It's obvious that an accounting system is important, not only due to the financial reporting requirements of the business, but also as a management tool.  Just as you want to keep track of where your money is going, it is extremely important to keep track of where your time is going.

In a service business in which…

Time Management- email

Don't be like a mouse in an experiment looking for food pellets.  Don't keep pressing that "get mail" constantly.  Set aside 4-6 times each day to check your email (7am, 10am, 1pm, 3pm, 6pm), and get work done in the inbetween times.  A lot of time, the emails will resolve themselves without your involvement.

I've sat through many prep sessions for pitch competitions.  Most of the time I get the impression that this is not only the path to some of the discipline required for success, it is the same path required to be all you can be, which is to be the next Twitter or Facebook.  Perhaps that is not a realistic goal around here.

You see, there are real advantages to a rich new business ecosystem.  People in Knoxville are working hard to provide that.  A big part of the established new…
