5 Popular Startups and How They Got Funding

Why do web startups raise money? And how? These are two questions that account for a huge corpus of tech and financial discussion. Despite the complexity involved in these questions, their answers can be condensed into an eight-word statement: Someone somewhere thought he’d make his money back.If you consider a few notable fundraising efforts from popular web startups, you begin to see how this aforementioned hypothetical “someone” might think his investment would be prudent and even…See More

How a 20 Year Old Female Entrepreneur Raises a Million Dollars and Gets Sh*t Done

I first got a chance to meet Jessica Mah at a post conference event in San Francisco in 2007. She was a bright eyed, young entrepreneur who had just moved to San Francisco to pursue her dreams of starting her own company and living the dream. No average teenager, Jessica was only 16 or 17 years old at the time and had already completed high school and college. She’s been programming since age 10, building businesses since…See More

Can entrepreneurs be made?

The nature vs. nurture debate is a common one in just about any field, but in the world of startups, it’s hotly contested. Some say you needinherent skills to stand any sort of chance at succeeding, while othersbelieve it’s possible to learn the ropes academically and successfullylaunch your own company. Serial entrepreneur Steve Blank, GRP Partners’Mark Suster, New Enterprises Associates’ Patrick Chung and Vivek Wadhwaof Harvard Law School debated the premise for over an hour earlier thisyear…See More

Hi, Charles!

My name is Megan Dunaway and I’m a new member at EOK. I wanted to introduce myself and see if you might be interested in attending a networking luncheon. The Knoxville Business Alliance is a great way for Entrepreneurs to meet new people who might be interested in helping bring an idea to market or can provide services to help you grow a business. We’re meeting this Thursday February 18th at the Club LeConte downtown at noon. Lunch is $12 and you can RSVP by calling 523-0405. Do you think you’d be able to make it?

We also have a weekly training session Wednesdays 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the same location. And we have a Pub Night the second Thursday of every month...this month we're meeting at Barley's in the Old City at 6:00 p.m.
